Update: The work has been completed. In addition to replacing the faulty photocell equipment, they also reportedly re-aimed the lights further off into the distance.
We received a number of complaints from our membership about a sudden increase in the intensity of light coming from the strobe lights on the CBC radio tower. Bruce contacted the CBC to see what was going on and what could be done about it. The CBC told us that the tower is maintained by a service company from Sudbury who holds a contract to maintain all their towers in the region in accordance with the standards of Industry Canada (hey, guess which MP just became the federal minister in charge of that portfolio? -- our own Tony Clement.) The lighting system has 3 settings and is controlled by a photocell, which adjusts the power according to the ambient light: Day intensity -- very bright Twighlight -- medium intensity Night -- lowest intensity At Bruce's urging, they investigated the system and found the photocell circuit had failed, leaving the system stuck on the Day setting. They have manually set it to Night mode while the required parts are ordered. Those parts expected to arrive on or about Nov 12, after which the system should again operate automatically.
