A Message from the President
Glen Norton

I had the privilege of representing the LWRA at the Federation of Ontario Cottagers Associations (FOCA) at the AGM held March 3rd in Toronto.  There were many useful displays and speakers, here is a link to the presentations. (FOCA - click here)
One of the sessions I attended was on responsible renting, and I was quite surprised to find that on some lakes up to one third of the cottages are being rented out for some part of the season. On some of the lakes cottages have been purchased solely for commercial purposes and are never occupied by the owners.  The resulting issues have included noisy parties, litter, and unsafe boating by inexperienced operators.  If you are going to rent out your property (and my family has been doing it since the 1920’s), please ensure you carefully screen your tenants, and make them aware of your expectations and the responsibilities they have to the other cottagers on the lake.

The keynote address was on...septic systems! Pretty exciting stuff (just kidding), but I did find out some interesting facts. For example: many people pump their tanks too often. The right time to pump is when the accumulated solids take up one-third of the depth of material in the tank.  Once a tank is pumped, it can take up to 5 months for it to get back to being an efficient treatment system, so when you need to pump, do it near to the end of the season.

I would like to encourage as many members as possible to attend the LWRA AGM on the Saturday of the July 1st long weekend, starting at 11:00 a.m.. In addition to being part of the decision making process on how we manage our lakes, you will be able to see our newly revitalized cottage/future retirement spot.  We also need a couple of new Directors for the Board, and in particular would like to have someone representing the Ripple Lake property owners. Please think about volunteering, it really is not a lot of work and a great way for you to get know some of the other owners.  The meeting will be at 724 N. Waseosa Lake Rd, and you can come by car, bike or boat.

See you soon!
Glen

AGM 2018 Saturday June 30, 2018
Wondering how decisions are being made, who’s making them, what goes into that decision, why did they do that, where is that new cottage going to fit, how much fun are the LWRA Directors having after all? Or are you just having a little bit of FOMO? Well all your questions can be answered if you attend the LWRA AGM! (NOPQRS  hahaha) Seriously, come join us at our President’s (Glen) beautiful rebuild (724 North Waseosa Lake Rd) for the AGM. It is usually an hour and a half and will provide answers to all the questions you may have about the lake’s activities, and what the directors are up to while you’re at work.

New Directors Required
Come join us! We’ve had many turnovers in the last couple of years so there’s plenty of opportunity to have your voice heard, offer new ideas and get involved. Dwayne Verhey has held the Secretary position for so long he has the bylaws memorized! It’s very handy indeed, but getting a bit tiring for poor Dwayne. He’s happy to be a help to anyone wanting to take on the role. Being a director takes hardly any time, a couple of hours a month at most. Please contact us at secretary@.net or just come to the AGM Saturday June 30. In fact, come to the AGM regardless to see what lake membership is all about.

Water Fun Day 2017
There was no shortage of FUN on WATER FUN day August 6, 2017! Nor was there a shortage of water given it poured rain on and off during the day’s events! If you can remember that far back, it was THE weather of Summer 2017.

sheltering in place

We were actually quite lucky that we had a break in the clouds for some beautiful sunny moments to warm ourselves up before the next downpour. Half our events continued in the rain, while we waited for others under the several tents provided by the LWRA (your dues put to good use!) There were many many children of the lake taking part in the festivities this year, and many first timers like my family.

We all had a really great time, lots of laughter, cheers, and victories! More photos can be found on our **new** LWRA Facebook group page here! Thank you Sandra Heinz for planning this great event year after year.

Be sure to join us for this year’s Water Fun Day at the Verhey’s (top of the lake) on August 4th, 2018. Reminders will be sent in June.

Corn Roast 2017
What a great event hosted by the West family on the West side of the lake! Summer had finally arrived so it was a gorgeous, warm September day. There was plenty of corn, burgers, dogs, and desserts (donated) and enjoyed by many. The raffle table was full of generous donations by members such that everybody went away with a prize. Another successful LWRA party!

Be sure to join us at this year’s Corn Roast on Labour Day weekend, September 1. More reminders will follow in the summer.

** New ** LWRA (private) Facebook Group!
So many pictures, so much fun, but no easy way to share the fun or the latest news. Well we’ve started a closed Facebook group for our lake community. Nobody other than those accepted by the administrator(s) can join or see what’s going on, so your privacy is reasonably guarded. If you’d like to join please go to this facebook site. Once your address on the lakes is validated, we will accept your request to join, ensuring our group remains private. If you’re having any trouble signing up, please email through our contact page. In addition, if you do decide to sell your dream cottage on the lake, please exit the group as no point in staying in, right? (-8

(Note from the LWRA Privacy Officer: as recent news has shown, Facebook is not a secure environment and the LWRA cannot control what uses Facebook or others may make of personal data posted there.)

Watch your Wake!
Same story, new year, please be mindful of your boat’s wake so that your neighbour’s dock doesn’t do the dance everytime you ride by, and more importantly, so that the shoreline doesn’t get eroded. It’s in all of our best interest to keep our shorelines green and fully loaded with vegetation. Climate change is doing enough damage, it doesn’t need our help. In most provinces there is a 10 kph speed limit within 30 metres (100 feet) from shore. Wake rules are here if you’re wanting the details. (More safe boating rules are listed here.)

Annual Dues
Some folks had paid in September at the Corn Roast, some earlier in the season, in theory they’re due at the start of Season. Membership in the LWRA is open to any area ratepayer with a limit of one membership per property and one membership per person.  All new memberships must be approved by the Board of Directors to ensure compliance with the rules.
Annual dues are $40.00.   Dues can be:
1.  Sent c/o 21 Cottage Lane, Huntsville, Ontario, P1H 2J4
2.  Paid in person at one of our events.
3.  Paid by e-transfer to treasurer@lwra.net    please use password annual

Can’t remember why we need those dues? They pay for trophies and ribbons for Water Fun Day, corn, burgers and dogs for the Corn Roast, the great activity tents for suny/rainy events, and our fantastic new LWRA trailer which is housing all our party supplies! It’s wonderful to empty out member’s garages and have our own place to call storage.

Those cute little LWRA signs?
Yes, they are available to members. The cost is a one-time fee of $15, to pay for the sign itself. This is separate from your annual LWRA membership (which is used for events, water testing, Town Hall costs, etc.) Then, each year that you remain a member, you receive a small sticker (free) to put on your sign – kind of like a license plate sticker. If you would like a sign, they are available at the AGM, Water fun day, and corn roast (where/when we also accept payment of membership dues).

If you have any questions about this newsletter, please feel free to contact Katarina through our contact page.
Have a wonderful, happy, safe and wake free summer! We’ll see you at the AGM, Water Fun Day, and Corn Roast.
Just a few more sleeps (for some of us)  8-)
